Planting Tips

Here are a few helpful hints for your new material. You will also receive complete planting instructions with your purchase of any shrub or tree from Martin Landscape Center. Our sales staff is also available to answer any questions you may have.

Planting Instructions

For Clay Soil:

All holes should be 1-1/2 -2 times the width of the ball. Plant the tree with about 1-2 inches of the root ball above the existing grade. The ground under the root ball should remain undisturbed.

For Sandy Soil:

All holes should be 1-1/2 -2 times the width of the ball and the depth should be level with the existing grade.

Backfill with topsoil and mound over the tree ball with 1 inch of topsoil. Then mulch over the top of the ball of the tree. Be sure to keep the root ball covered with topsoil and mulch at all times to retain moisture in the root ball.

Be sure to cut any rope at the base of the tree’s trunk. All other items (wire, basket, burlap, etc.) should remain undisturbed.

Watering Instructions

Trees: The tree should be watered immediately after being planted for at least an hour, longer for larger trees. Set the hose at the base of the tree and turn the hose to a steady trickle. Make sure the water is soaking into the ball of the tree thoroughly. After initial watering, the tree should be watered for approx. one hour every five days. This should continue for 90 days and after that, water as needed.

Shrubs: Follow the same as above but adjust the time to 10-15 minutes per shrub depending on the size of the shrub.

Evergreens: Small evergreens should be watered in the same manner as shrubs; large evergreens should be watered in the same manner as trees. However, the watering should only be done once every seven days.
